Bird's nest fern actually boasts quite an illustrious lineage, one that traces back 400 million years. Kuo Chen-Meng, former curator of National Taiwan University's Herbarium and known as the "Fern Godfather," has spent years lecturing and championing Taiwan's precious fern heritage. By area, Taiwan can rightfully claim the title of "the world's Fern Kingdom." Four hundred million years ago, ferns dominated the plant world, towering at heights of 20 to 30 meters.
Ancient Dinosaurs Roaming Beneath Towering Ferns
Extinct dinosaurs once roamed and hunted beneath these massive fern trees. It wasn't until conifers and other seed plants displaced ferns from their dominant position that these ancient plants began evolving into smaller, epiphytic forms, adapting to grow on or beneath the trees, rocks, and terrain now ruled by today's flora. Bird's nest fern, also known as nest fern, primarily grows as an epiphyte on tree trunks, distinguished by its spore-bearing structures that develop along leaf veins with characteristic linear indusia (protective membranes covering the spore clusters).
Taiwan is home to three native species of bird's nest fern, mostly thriving in mid- to low-elevation mountains (500–2,500 meters). Indigenous peoples were the first to harvest these as wild vegetables, prizing the tender, curled shoot tips for their silky-smooth, crisp texture—available for foraging year-round. The Amis tribe was the first to recognize its culinary potential. Large-scale cultivation began in 1991 as Taiwanese appetites for wild delicacies grew, eventually elevating this humble fern to a coveted ingredient in restaurants and mountain cuisine establishments. The primary growing regions are Hualien County and Taitung County.
Bird's nest fern serves medicinal and ornamental purposes beyond culinary use. Its tender shoots, when crushed, make effective wound dressings and rank among the medicinal herbs traditionally used by indigenous communities.
Taiwan cultivates three varieties of bird's nest fern: common bird's nest fern, nanyang bird's nest fern, and Taiwan bird's nest fern. The nanyang variety offers the best flavor and largest tender shoots, making it the primary commercial variety with the most extensive cultivation area. Bird's nest fern also excels as an ornamental houseplant, thriving indoors without lengthy sun exposure, perfect for bringing a touch of tropical greenery to any interior space.
