Sun Moon Lake, blessed with the ethereal beauty of one of "Taiwan's Eight Scenic Wonders," sits cradled by verdant mountains and dense forests. Divided by Lalu Island, the lake's eastern waters curve like the sun while its western expanse mirrors the moon—hence its poetic name.
This magnificent landscape showcases nature's artistry while nurturing the rich cultural heritage of indigenous peoples. Today, it seamlessly blends local specialty cuisine with sophisticated luxury accommodations, creating a perfect harmony of natural beauty, cultural depth, and refined living.
Gazing across Nantou's Sun Moon Lake, its serene depths reflect azure skies while the meandering Zhuoshui River flows southward, as if inscribing ancient tales across the land. This unique topography has fostered the Sun Moon Lake Thao tribe and the Zhuoshui River Bunun tribe. Through generations, their profound connection to the land and ancestral wisdom live on through traditional dishes, allowing diners to savor not just flavors, but the timeless songs of the earth itself.
Preserving Tribal Heritage: Culinary Traditions by Mountain Lakes
Scattered along the Zhuoshui River basin, the Bunun tribe takes pride in their hunting heritage and has developed a distinctive meat distribution ritual to share game and blessings among community members. With millet serving as their staple grain, this crop is featured prominently in annual celebrations. Each November and December, the Bunun hold millet planting ceremonies, believing the more harmonious and beautiful their prayer songs, the more heavenly spirits rejoice—ensuring millet harvest will be abundant and fruitful for the year. This belief gave rise to the world’s unique pasibutbut (eight-part harmony).
During festivals, the Bunun people prepare a dish called abai, shaped like rice dumplings, symbolizing unity and the importance of traditional ceremonies. Many Bunun dishes masterfully incorporate wild mountain herbs like maqaw (mountain pepper) and Alianthus prickly ash to create distinctive flavors. Meanwhile, in Yuchi Township, the Bunun actively promote the cultivation of Taiwan Tea No. 18 “Ruby Black Tea," fostering cultural and industrial revival while breathing new life into the local tea industry.
According to ancient Thao legend, their ancestors discovered the lake while pursuing a mysterious white deer, eventually choosing to settle along these serene shores, becoming the earliest indigenous inhabitants of Sun Moon Lake. Today, the Thao still preserve their traditional culture, including rituals, song and dance, and religious beliefs. Most representative is the Masbabiar (pestle pounding sound), a unique percussion that accompanies ancestral spirit ceremonies, symbolizing New Year blessings.
The Thao people's traditional delicacy of deep-fried sharpbelly offers an incomparably crisp texture, while predatory carp, prized for its delicate flavor, has earned the nickname "presidential fish" and remains a favorite among gourmands. The deeply symbolic white eel mochi is crafted by pounding together millet and upland rice, then shaped with bamboo skewers to resemble eels before being grilled over flames until the exterior becomes crispy while the interior stays soft and chewy.
Once reserved exclusively for eel worship ceremonies and traditional ancestral house blessing rituals, this dish has now become a signature local specialty. It perpetuates the Thao's reverence for nature while bridging traditional culture with contemporary life, creating a flavorful link between generations.
Finding the Sustainable Convergence of Culture and Landscape at Sun Moon Lake
At night, listening to gentle waves lapping the shores, Sun Moon Lake reflects the pristine moonlight. Several lakefront luxury resorts use ingenious architectural design to create an atmosphere of living in harmony with the lake, offering travelers a dreamlike and unforgettable hospitality experience. Beyond luxurious accommodation and dining, the area is also committed to promoting eco-tourism and cultural sustainability, allowing visitors to experience the wisdom of coexisting with this sacred land amid its stunning mountain and lake scenery.
The newly reimagined Dili Visitor Information Station by the Sun Moon Lake National Scenic Area Administration incorporates totems, colors, and public art all developed through consultation with Bunun tribal members, fully integrating local culture. The most representative artistic landmark, Bunun Giant qudas, hand-crafted by Bunun artist Luang Mankoko, sits majestically beside the Zhuoshui River, symbolizing reverence for nature and life.
The Ita Thao Waterfront Hiking Trail, situated between Ita Thao Pier and the Sun Moon Lake Ropeway Station, connects the lakeside with the forest. Travelers can stroll along this path in the early morning, admiring the mist-shrouded lake surface and experiencing Sun Moon Lake's distinctive tranquil atmosphere. The century-old Sun Moon Lake Tea Factory, after surviving the devastating 1999 earthquake, transformed into a sustainable tourism tea estate promoting organic agriculture and black tea culture. Complete with tea-tasting areas, environmental education spaces, and guided tours of the tea-making process, it allows visitors to feel the warmth of the land and the accumulation of time through the essence of a single cup of tea.
